The Parish of St. Francis Xavier
in Valdez, Alaska
is the oldest Parish on the South-central coast of Alaska,
having been dedicated and blessed by Bishop Crimont S.J. in 1908. After the
earthquake in 1964 destroyed the original townsite of Valdez,
a new church was built at the present site, dedicated and blessed by Archbishop
Joseph Ryan, in 1968.
St Francis Xavier is one of 30
parishes and missions in the Archdiocese of Anchorage that does not have a
priest in residence. Father LeRoy Clementich, C.S.C., who is located in Anchorage,
is the canonical pastor for St Francis Xavier. Sister Marie Ann Brent is the
resident Pastoral Administrator.
