Over 100 years ago, in 1888, Mt Comfort United Methodist Church was established in its present location, although the roots of the church began 60 years earlier.
History books tell us that beginning in 1836 the forefathers of our congregation worshipped in the homes of Thomas Craig, Odebiah Eastes and Daniel Skinner. At that time the membership probably contained 10 families.
In March 17, 1840 Thomas Craig sold a tract of land for $5.00 to church trustees Holman Eastes, John Kokenhour, Andrew Cooper and James Burris to "erect and build or cause to be erected and built a house of place of worship for the use of the members of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States of America" Hope trust and faith in God brought for the first forerunner of our church, a small log structure which bore the name Sycamore Chapel. The precise location of the church is not known because various documents disagree.
The church continued to serve the growing community in its location until tragedy struck in 1863. The two youngest sons of James Burris, Johnson 23, and Henry 21 died in Louisiana fighting in the Civil War. A monument was built in their honor beside the Sycamore Chapel. Later the same year, fire struck and destroyed the Sycamore Chapel and once again, the congregation found itself without a church.
For seven years from 1863 to 1870 the Methodist congregation of Buck Creek Township was without a place of worship. Finally, A new building was built in 1870 and was erected on the site of the original chapel. The new edifice bore the name Hopewell Methodist Episcopal Church.
