Who We Are

In 1953 a small group of caring community members, with a budget of $259, formed the Mental Health America of Porter County, Inc. Their mission. . . to advocate for the mentally ill. Today, over 60 years later, we continue to be a voice for those suffering from mental illness and addictions and have broadened our services to provide education, resource and referral and support to help all members of our community improve and maintain their mental wellness.

Mission: Mental Health America of Porter County is dedicated to promoting mental health, preventing mental and substance use conditions and achieving victory over mental illnesses and addictions through advocacy, education, research and service.

Vision: Mental Health America of Porter county envisions a just, humane and healthy society in which all people are accorded respect, dignity and the opportunity to achieve their full potential through meaningful social inclusion that is free from discrimination.

Purpose: The purposes of Mental Health America of Porter County are to work for wellness, mental health and victory over mental and substance use conditions; to advocate the improved care and treatment of persons with mental and substance use conditions; to advocate for improved methods and services in research, prevention, detection, diagnosis and treatment of mental and substance use conditions; to educate the public about mental and substance use conditions and their causes and treatments; and to fight stigma and prejudice and promote social justice and recovery from mental and substance use conditions.

What We Do

Open Door Social Club...

A safe social outlet for adults living with mental illness who are treatment compliant. this drop-in-center offers members many opportunities to socialize, gain peer approval, enjoy outings, meals and build life skills to help maintain their path to mental wellness.


 giftLIFT...

Provides individuals and families impacted by mental illness with gifts during the holiday season. Recipients would not have the joy of opening a gift, knowing someone cares, without this program.


 Bridging the Gap...

Emergency assistance for individuals in financial crisis to purchase prescribed medications to treat their mental illness and/or addictions. Once the crisis is past the clients are provided individual assistance to access resources to increase their financial independence.


 Live Your Life Well Outreach Programs...

Educational outreach providing tools to assist in building self-esteem of youth; assisting in making healthy life style choices; support to family. support for families and friends of individuals with a diagnosed mental illness/addiction.


 Advocacy...

As State appointed ombudsman, staff responds to requests for help, assuring the rights and needs of individuals living with mental illness and/or addictions are met.


Resource...

Providing resources for: support groups, providers, websites and any information pertaining to mental wellness.
