GALION, OHIO

The Galion Theatre, Harding Way West -  The former movie theatre known as, “THE GALION” was built in 1949. In 1993 it was sold to “THE GALION COMMUNITY THEATRE GROUP”. A variety of productions make their way to this stage throughout the year. The building is also rented for private functions.

Brownella Cottage, South Union St.  -  BROWNELLA COTTAGE, the home of Episcopal Bishop William Scranton Brown, was built in 1887 at a cost of $6,500. The cottage stood empty for 40 years after the death of the Bishop. In 1979 it was given to the Galion Historical Society and presently serves as their headquarters/museum.

Veteran’s Memorial At Heise Park - The VETERANS MEMORIAL in Heise Park was dedicated on May 18, 2002. The memorial is in honor of men and women from the Galion area who have served in our armed forces.

Galion Public Library, North Market St.  - The GALION PUBLIC LIBRARY was built in 1904. The money to build this beautiful Classical Ionic Design building was provided by Andrew Carneige.

The Log House At Heise Park  - This structure was built around 1822 as a home, then became the original “GALION PUBLIC LIBRARY & READING ROOM”.

The Big Four Depot, South Washington St. -  The “BIG FOUR DEPOT” was built in 1900 and purchased by the city of Galion in 2000. In the railroads' hey-day, 32 passenger and mail trains came through Galion on an average day. Presidential candidates Al Smith (1928), Franklin D. Roosevelt (1932), and Dwight D. Eisenhower and Richard Nixon (1959) presented their “platform speeches” at the depot.

Galion Park Square & Gazebo - Located on the square of Galion in the retail district, Galion’s gazebo hosts various events throughout the year and is the focus of the annual Come Home To Galion/Annual Christmas Tree Lighting event that takes place, on the first Saturday of December every year.  You can reserve the Gazebo by calling the Office at 419-468-1857.

Oktoberfest- The Galion Oktoberfest begins the last Thursday of September every year and features some outstanding musical entertainment. It runs Thursday through Saturday. The event includes rides, games, food vendors with many great choices as well as the wonderful musical entertainment on the three stages.

Come Home to Galion-This event takes place the first Saturday in December annually and includes entertainment, tours of Brownella Cottage, an open house at the Library, carriage and buggy rides, ice sculpting and some great food on the square. The parade begins at 4:30 pm from Heise Park, to Jefferson St. to Harding Way and ends at the Depot. Immediately following the parade there is a ceremony, complete with the singing of Christmas Carols, the reading of the Christmas story and culminating with the lighting of the annual Christmas Tree. Santa then goes to the Santa House on the square to listen to all the requests of the children.
