City Of Bay

220 Elder Street
870-781-3386

Our town has borne 4 different names down through the years. First it was called Big Bay Siding by the railroad people. News reporters frequently referred to it as Bay Siding. Early settlers called it Big Bay or The Bay. Because of a ruling by the Postal Department in Washington, D.C., the name was shortened to 3 little letters, B-A-Y. This finalized the name of our town, Bay, in 1884 (E.M.)

We have two Indian Mounds a little north of Bay. They are the same size as they were when they were built, according to studies. These mounds have been used for burial grounds for people who lived early around Bay, and couldn't get to the hills for burial purposes. Recent studies by archaeologist have verified that the mounds were not Indian burial grounds, but were used for worship purposes. (E.M.)
