The local PFLAG chapter is active up and down the Cape, providing valuable resources, offering a supportive community, hosting a podcast, and awarding scholarships to high school seniors who have been advocates for equality.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH FROM GAIL BLAKELY

GRILLED SHRIMP AND SPICY SLAW
Welcome summer with this easy dish, which we made in our Memorial Day cooking class on the back porch. Using pre-shredded cabbage makes it simple: we used half a package of shredded red cabbage, a package of broccoli slaw, and another of traditional cabbage “cole slaw” mix. We diced the jalapeño, and used half cilantro and half parsley for the final dish. If you don’t want to grill the shrimp, you could easily sauté them in a little oil on your stovetop (or roast them in 425F oven). Do try to get the mango, however: cutting it into julienne slices so it “hides” in the slaw is what makes the dish so good—you don’t expect to get a bite of “sweet” mixed in with the cabbage!

GARDEN TIP FROM GEORGE CHAPMAN

TOP DRESSING THE GARDEN

Over the past few years I have found that top dressing really does make a difference. Now, I am not talking about donning a shirt or a blouse here, I am talking about adding beneficial compost to the garden and around the root zones of plants.

Compost is decaying organic matter and comes in many different forms, from leaf compost gathered at the local municipal leaf dump to bags that can be purchased at your nearby garden center. Bagged selections can include chicken or cow manure, crustacean shells blended with peat and manure, enriched topsoil and more.

Whatever your flavor, your plants will respond. Compost aids in water retention, nutrient availability and aeration. Add compost to underperforming plants, those that were set back by this winter’s deep freeze, or any special treasures that deserve a boost. It is not a big job. Top dressing is simply that, adding compost to the top of the soil and letting Mother Nature do the rest. Problem areas and problem plants should get dressed!
