Arts and Entertainment

October 11, 2023

From: Martha's Vineyard Film Society

Congratulations to Phil Dunn (Stupid Boy) Steve Anthopuolis (Voice Activated) and Teemu Nikki (Tuulikki). The Gold Medal for Best Actor was awarded to Alek Mikic for his performance in Voice Activated. Best Screenplay winner is Petra Hood for her screenplay "Courage".

On a more local level -- for the 500+ attendees who came out for the Manhattan Short Film Festival at the MV Film Center, our voting results mirrored exactly the awardees mentioned above - which is not surprising.

The team at MANHATTAN SHORT would like to thank all the Filmmakers, all the wonderful venues involved and most importantly YOU the Public for taking these films and this event into your hearts.

This Friday afternoon, from 1-3:00PM join us for an artshow opening of new works by Adriana Eftimie. Refreshments will be served.

MET OPERA live at the Film Center starts October 21st with new production, DEAD MAN WALKING.

NEW THIS WEEK...

5th annual WOMEN IN FILM FESTIVAL runs

October 13-15 at the Film Center

WIFF is a celebration of women in film: both in front of and behind the camera. This festival features stories that have not usually been told from a woman’s perspective.

On our big screen, WIFF includes six films featuring female characters who break the mold in as many genres as possible.

CONTINUING THIS WEEK...

STOP MAKING SENSE — Perhaps the greatest concert film of all time, Stop Making Sense brings to the screen the "Talking Heads" at Hollywood’s Pantages Theater in December 1983: David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, and Jerry Harrison, alongside an ecstatic ensemble of supporting musicians. Renowned filmmaker Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs, Diner) captures the band at their exhilarating best, in this new and complete restoration for the film’s 40th anniversary.

THE EIGHT MOUNTAINS follows over four decades the profound, complex relationship between Pietro (Luca Marinelli) from Milan, and Bruno (Alessandro Borghi), who grew up in an isolated mountainside village. From the filmmakers behind Academy Award®-nominee The Broken Circle Breakdown, and based on the bestselling novel by Paolo Cognetti. This incredible film is truly

rejuvenating and soul-warming (remember how you felt walking out of Drive My Car?), and its emotional pull and gorgeous vistas make it a must-see on the big screen.

Winner of the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and Opening Night selection of the recent MV International Film Festival.

COMING ATTRACTIONS...

GOLDA

October 19th opens

GOLDA is a ticking-clock thriller set during the tense 19 days of the Yom Kippur War in 1973. Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir (Helen Mirren), faced with the potential of Israel’s complete destruction, must navigate overwhelming odds, a skeptical cabinet, and a complex relationship with US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger (Liev Schreiber), with millions of lives in the balance. Her tough leadership and compassion would ultimately decide the fate of her nation and leave her with a controversial legacy around the world.
