The 140-Year Legacy Of The American Red Cross Nursing Service

Explore Their History

When Clara Barton risked her life to care for wounded Civil War soldiers, she began a legacy of selfless compassion that would span over 140 years and counting.

Today, thousands of American Red Cross nurses continue Clara’s original mission: delivering kindness and lifesaving care to those in need.

Providing essential care in the wake of disasters, our nursing team is vital to our work from coast to coast.

That’s why, in honor of National Nurses’ Week, and National Nurses’ Month throughout all of May, we’re inviting you to look back on the history of the Red Cross Nursing Service — from the Civil War to the Spanish Flu epidemic and beyond.

We invite you to learn more about the 140-year legacy of the Red Cross Nursing Service and how our nurses continue to transform lives today.

Thank you for helping us to celebrate National Nurses’ Week!
