INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indiana House Elections and Apportionment Committee is scheduled to hear Senate Bill 287 on Wednesday at 10:30 AM ET in Room 156-B, a bill which would end Indiana’s nonpartisan school board election system if passed.
Nonpartisan boards have been a staple of Hoosier elections for decades, and the vast majority of school board elections nationally are not partisan races.
This bill advanced out of the State Senate by just one vote, with bipartisan opposition coming from all Democrats and over a dozen Republicans in the Senate.
SB 287 is the only item on the committee’s agenda for Wednesday. Those interested in testifying may sign up on the committee’s webpage on the day of the hearing. The Republican-controlled committee may decide to not take public comments.
