Midnight in Paris: A Fiddler in the French Court
Lindsey Strand-Polyak, violon (violin)
Adaiha MacAdam-Somer, viole de gambe (viola da gamba)
Jillon Stoppels-Dupree, clavecin (harpsichord)
One evening in December, 1682, an unknown violin virtuoso from Dresden named Johann Paul von Westhoff gave two performances for the Sun King, Louis XIV, and his courtiers, amazing his audience and garnering a write-up in the widely circulated Mercure Galant. Join violinist Lindsey Strand-Polyak and friends as we present Westhoff's shocking Sonata “La Guerra” (War!) performed in much the way it would have been heard in 1682—surrounded by music by prominent French musicians of the era. Don your best brocade jacket, nibble a macaron, sip your champagne, and promenade with us down the hall of mirrors at Versailles for an intimate afternoon with: “Le Grand” François Couperin, viola da gamba player-composer Marin Marais, harpsichordist-composer Elisabeth Claude Jacquet de la Guerre, and Westhoff himself, a raconteur violinist all the way from Dresden. Northwest native, Lindsey Strand-Polyak serves as Artistic Director of Los Angeles Baroque, Adjunct Professor of Baroque Violin at Claremont Graduate University, and Director of the San Francisco Early Music Society’s Baroque Workshop.
