The Cumberland County Historic and Genealogical Society maintains records and assists with the preservation of local history in Cumberland County (including the villages of Greenup, Toledo, Neoga, Jewett, Woodbury, Montrose, Union Center, Janesville, Diona, Gila, Hazel Dell, and Cottonwood). The historic society is housed in the Johnson Building, one of the three century-old buildings owned by the CCHGS and registered on the National Register of Historic Places.

Located in the Johnson Building are wonderfully crafted exhibits of life in Cumberland County, including information on favorite sons, Dick and Jerry VanDyke, who lived in Cumberland County before moving to Danville, Illinois. Information related to Abraham Lincoln, Greenup’s historic architecture, and the National Road is tastefully displayed. A new addition, called the War Room, houses information related to our many Cumberland County veterans who have sacrificed their jobs, families, and lives in the defense of our nation, dating from the Mexican War through the present conflict in Iraq.
