History

Early in 1951, five families in Niles believed there was a need for a Protestant church in Niles. They began worshiping in the home of one of these families and eventually moved to the basement of Niles Public School. The church was chartered on March 23, 1952. The first purchase of land for the church occurred November 1, 1952, followed by the addition of three lots on April 7, 1953.

The manse, a house south of the church property, was purchased February 9, 1954. Ground breaking for the main church building took place March 13, 1955. The first worship service and church school in the new building were held January 22, 1956. Ground breaking for the Youth Wing took place September 13, 1959. This wing was dedicated on Sunday, September 24, 1960. In 1962, a new addition to the manse was completed.

A special effort was then made to pay off all indebtedness. On September 19, 1971, the mortgage of the church was burned 11 years ahead of schedule. In 2002 Niles Community Church celebrated our 50th anniversary. As a part of the celebration, most areas of the building were refurbished and repainted. The chancel was raised, four new rooms were built inside existing space, and numerous other improvements were made to enhance the appearance of the church.

Today, Niles Community Church is an integral part of the Niles community, providing a place to worship along with meeting facilities for many self-help groups in the area.
