New Trier Township had a population of 473 when it organized its government. The residents were a mix of farmers who had immigrated from Germany and entrepreneurial types who saw opportunities to start businesses, build their homes and raise their families in this developing area. Now the New Trier Township is a tract of land that is home to more than 56,000 people. It is also a unit of local government created by the Illinois Constitution of 1848 to serve the fundamental needs of citizens. The Township covers approximately 17 square miles. It is smaller than most Illinois townships because about half its land is in Lake Michigan. Included in its borders are the villages of Wilmette, Kenilworth, Winnetka, and Glencoe, plus portions of Glenview and Northfield. There is also a small unincorporated area in Winnetka.
