National Park Service

1900 Anacostia Drive South East
202-426-6905

About Us
Anacostia Park is a unit of National Capital Parks - East, of the National Park Service. It has national significance for the opportunity it provides to see the history of our country's policy toward rivers from pre-Columbian times to the present. It also serves as an model to other cities, using the flood plain of a river as natural park land to maintain water quality and reduce flood damage. While this is becoming more common in the last few decades, the plan was authorized by Congress here in the early part of the 1900s. Several rare species for our area are protected in Anacostia Park, and the park is home to a variety of wildlife not common in urban areas.
