Indian Trail Elementary School

6235 Stonewall

Indian Trail School first opened its doors to students in August 1967. The building was under construction during the year and classes were held in the First Methodist Church at 1032 Maple Avenue in Downers Grove. Students moved into the building in 1968 with about 300 students in grades Kindergarten through sixth. In 1968 we also housed a sixth grade class from El Sierra as their building was under construction. In 1973 as the District continued to grow they built the Administrative Service Center. Our population continued to grow slowly. In 1987 they had to move our fifth and sixth graders plus a class of our kindergartners to other buildings in the District because our building was too small to house everyone. In 1989 they started a year long construction project that more than doubled the size of our school. In the 1990 - 1991 school year we welcomed back all of our students, as well as the developmental learning program from Hillcrest School. Our enrollment had grown to almost 500 students. In 1992 we added a second addition onto the building to provide additional lunch space and offices. Because the District and our school continued to grow, the District decided to change our boundaries sending almost 100 students to the Kingsley attendance area. Even with the loss of 100 students our population continued to grow toward 580 students. Over the past several years our population has dropped and stabilized. We currently house approximately 435 students plus the District's Grove Preschool for Early Childhood Special Education and at-risk children. A SASED Multi-needs classroom is also a part of our building
