During the 1960s, Dale City was a new town. Woodbridge had grown with continued development by the Hylton family. It was logical to begin a new community, which was called Dale City. Dale City Baptist Church was built in the area in 1968.

Plans for a second Baptist Church was started at that time. Property was purchased on Hillendale Drive with a loan from the Baptist Extension Board. In early 1973, the Missions Committee of the Dale City Baptist Church was authorized by the Potomac Baptist Association to form a Pastor Selection Committee. This committee was charged with the responsibility to find a pastor to lead the new congregation. In July, Rev John A. Mann, then Associate Pastor of the Broadus Memorial Baptist Church in Richmond, was asked to be that pastor.

The first worship service of Hillendale Baptist Church was held on October 7, 1973, in the Kerrydale Elementary School. Fifty-three persons united with the new church as its first members.

The church was formally chartered and organized on October 5, 1975. At that time, there were 146 members. The church became a fully participating church in the Potomac Baptist Association and has remained so since. In 1975, the church elected deacons, adopted a constitution, and elected a Building Committee to oversee construction of the present Hillendale Baptist Church. The building was occupied on August 21, 1977.
