Hayward Adult School

22100 Princeton Street
510-293-8595

History:

Beginning in 1934, the Adult School was called the Hayward Union Evening School and held classes in the evenings at the old Hayward High School building on Foothill Blvd. Teachers were day teachers who moonlighted in the evenings. All classes served adults seeking their high school diploma. The Hayward Union Evening School had a clear goal of serving common needs with quality education. Growth was gradual and was maintained even during the war years.

At this height of enrollment the campus peaked at serving 18,000 students in the mid-2000's with over 200 instructors and nearly 50 classified staff. Due to recent budget reductions, class offerings were drastically diminished. Our campus, located in Hayward, California, now serves approximately 4,000 students annually.

In the Spring of 2012, the Hayward Unified School District Board approved the name change of the school to the Hayward Center for Education and Careers.

Our campus continues to provide opportunities for students to learn English,  obtain their GED/High School Diploma, gain career and technical education, parenting and employability skills to fulfill their life-long learning goals. The Hayward Center is an integral part of the Hayward education community with satellite class offerings for HUSD parents at various elementary and middle schools and afternoon credit recovery classes for high school students at their home campus.
