The Green Creek Methodist Episcopal Church was organized in 1850 by a group of Methodists who saw the need for a church in their community. As a result of much sacrifice and effort, a place of worship was constructed on the lot were it now stands. It was just one room, heated by a wood stove and lighted by lamps. Later the vestibule and belfry were added; the height of the roof raised. The original hanging oil lamp , in the center of our sanctuary, was eventually converted to electricity. It remains an object of beauty, supplemented by our side wall lamps.
The bell, still in use today, was installed in 1881. Our present pews were purchased in the year 1910, and our stained glass windows were added in 1925. Our elaborately carved walnut altar furniture - the pulpit, communion table, the two side communion chairs, pastor's arm chair and two companion chairs - was made in 1889 and received in 1967 from Trinity Methodist Church in Pennsville. Our original communion table stands in our church vestibule. In July 1968 an anonymous donor paid to have our sanctuary air-conditioned, providing great comfort for our summer services. Then in 1975, a contribution by Mary C. Fisher enabled us to construct our social hall as an important addition to our church, under the supervision and direction of Ralph Schellinger . Down through the years, ever since 1850, our little church has touched and transformed the lives of countless men and women. Today our mission is to continue the ministry entrusted to us and to share the Gospel, w ith others, knowing that it is " the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.
