History:

In September 1941, some interested Altonians set forth a plan to bring professional musicians, dancers, and theater to Alton and the surrounding communities. The Alton Concert Association was founded. The first series included the Von Trapp family, and was a complete sellout. This success reflected the belief, shared by the pioneers, that the arts are a vital ingredient to a growing community.

When Hatheway Hall was completed at Monticello College in 1968, the Alton Concert Association joined hands with the College becoming the Alton-Monticello Concert Association. Financial obligations were shared equally. When Monticello College closed, the Association became the Greater Alton Concert Association. The Monticello campus became the Lewis & Clark Community College with GACAF performances continuing to be in Hatheway Hall. 

In 1999 we became a foundation, making it easier to accept larger donations from individuals and corporations.

GACAF, a not-for-profit organization, continues to operate with a no-hired personnel policy. Our Board of Directors volunteer their time and services in carrying on the business of the organization.

GACAF has provided everyone in the area the opportunity to embrace and embellish their cultural life, in the realm of music, dance and theater.
