History

There is an interesting account of an early termoil in the history of the Globe Public Schools, described in the book “Sheriff Thompson’s Day”, written by former Gila County School Superintendent and well-known historian, Mr. Jess G. Hayes. The book describes a lively debate, both at the Trustees meeting and in Globe, because the Territorial Legislature passed a law stating “no houses of ill fame shall operate within 400 yards of any courthouse, public school, city hall or any other public building.” This was about the same time the Board of Trustees had decided to construct a new eight-room schoolhouse.

This building, which is the present Central School, was constructed in 1891. The distance between the two was questionable, but was finally decided to be legal. The school housed all grades, elementary and high school. This gives Central School the dubious honor of being the oldest school building in the area still in use. The back portion of the school was added at a later date, in 1912

Noftsger Hill School was constructed in the same general era, although somewhat later, in 1917. It possesses some of the same basic handicaps and structural arrangement as Central. The old building at East Globe was built at the same time, 1917; obviously designed by the same architect, and contains many of the same building features.

The main portion of the high school was also built in 1917. The gymnasium was added in 1949, and the Music, Science and Shop wing in 1964. The first class on record as graduating from high school in Globe is in 1910.
