Gales Ferry School is a beautiful, new school with approximately 300 students, kindergarten through second grade. During the 2003-04 school year, there were three morning sessions of kindergarten and two afternoon sessions of kindergarten. There were five first grade classes and five second grade classes.

Our state of the art facility includes a beautiful library, fully functioning computer lab and regulation size gymnasium with a stage.

Early literacy and numeracy are our top priorities at Gales Ferry School. Classroom teachers regularly administer developmental reading assessments and running records to assess student performance. Our language arts consultants and our paraprofessionals provide additional support for our students.

Our students enjoy a variety of field trips. Students in first and second grade classes attend cultural performances at the Garde Theater in New London. Kindergarten students have traveled to the Mystic Aquarium, Alice Acres, and the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center. From time to time, individual classroom teachers have become involved with the Multicultural Resource Center located at Connecticut College. Subsequently, these teachers have been paired with teachers in other towns and their students have traveled together and participated in various learned experiences.

Close home-school communication is encouraged at Gales Ferry School. A school newsletter is sent home once a month highlighting activities and events going on at Gales Ferry School. Classroom teachers are also encouraged to send home newsletters keeping parents up to date regarding assignments and special projects in their classrooms. Many parents/guardians utilize our school answering machine to leave messages for teachers and administrators and to report their children's absences.

Our school colors are blue and white and our mascot is a jaguar.

The PTO is very active in supporting our school. They provide trips, educational programs, pizza & subway lunches, classroom student support, and anything else to make GFS a great school.
