First Presbyterian Church of Des Plaines

1755 Howard Avenue
847-299-4215

About Us:

Started in 1953 in the Orchard Place neighborhood, families met in each others' homes until a congregation known as Des Plaines Community Church was formed.

Through the years, the group gathered for worship, praise and study in many different locations. Among them, the Orchard Place School gymnasium as well as the old Masonic Temple building in uptown Des Plaines. The men of the church built a manse on Lunt St. for the pastor and family to live in and their home was the site of many Sunday school classes and worship hours. Finally in the 1960's, ground was broken on the land at the corner of Howard and Maple where the building currently stands and the Presbyterian congregation has sought fellowship and spiritual growth. An addition had been built to provide more classroom area.

Sunday services were recently held at 10:00 a.m., led by a pulpit supply pastor, with Communion being served on the first Sunday of the month, usually. On Saturdays, a Seventh Day Adventist group had been renting space here to hold their worship service and classes. Due to the anticipated sale of the building and property, they will be seeking a new location after September 23, perhaps in Elk Grove. During the weekdays, the Northwest Suburban Day Care has operated in this building for 47 years and plans to continue caring for children at this location, though there would be new owners.

The size of the congregation has waxed and waned over the years. Today's worshipers are coming to terms with the reality that the building and property will likely be sold before the end of October with the last day to worship in the sanctuary being September 24, 2017. We will continue to gather as a worshiping body, however, where and when…. remains to be seen. No matter, where two or more are gathered in His name there is love and you are always welcome to find fellowship with our small group.
