In the fall of 1900, the first students reported to classes at the "rock" school in Dewey. With the start of the 1999-2000 school year, we marked 100 years of operation as a school serving the needs of the Dewey community. This project is dedicated to all students, parents, board members and faculty -- who have gone before and left this legacy.

Prior to the rock school in Dewey, area students received their lessons at "Country Subscription Schools". The Delaware Tribe began two of the earliest in the late 1870s or early 1880s. Schools were located at the forks of the Caney and Post Oak Creek areas. About the same time, Miss Mellie Smith operated a school for Nelson Carr, south of Dewey near the Beck Cemetery. Another school was located northwest of Dewey, run by Miss Frona Gibbens and was opened to children of all races. The most successful was perhaps the Post Oak School, which continued operation until the 1930s when it eventually consolidated with the Dewey Schools.
