Governor Pritzker’s historic capital program improving infrastructure throughout Illinois

Springfield – Entering Year Four of Rebuild Illinois, the Illinois Department of Transportation announced on June 16th, that multiple projects in the Springfield area are planned or underway, highlighting an ongoing commitment made possible by Governor JB Pritzker’s historic, bipartisan capital program. Seven major projects represent a total investment of more than $100 million, improving safety, mobility and quality of life while sustaining and creating good-paying jobs throughout the region.

“With the Rebuild Illinois capital plan, we are restoring and transforming Illinois’ aging infrastructure,” said Gov. Pritzker. “Rebuild Illinois is not only about investing in infrastructure but about investing in people and communities as well. In the coming months, IDOT will undertake projects that will ultimately create safer roads and bridges and provide jobs in the Springfield area and across the entire state.”

In the Springfield area, one project is already completed, with the others expected to be finished within the next two years. They include:

• 10th Street railroad tracks at Madison and Jefferson streets underpasses and double tracking begins this spring, with a scheduled completion date in late 2024. Beginning this fall, Madison and Jefferson streets will be closed for the duration of the project and traffic detoured to Carpenter Street.

• Fifth and Sixth streets between Stanford Avenue and Ash Street bridge replacements, railroad capacity improvements and upgrades, as well as drainage enhancements, began in 2019 and are scheduled to be completed in late fall. Lane closures will be required during most of the project. For short durations, full closures on Fifth and Sixth streets will be required to install overhead structures.

• Interstate 72 between Wabash Avenue and Illinois 4 interchanges bridge deck replacement, resurfacing, bridge and retaining wall repairs began last year and are scheduled to be completed in late 2022. Lane closures will be required, with at least one lane of traffic in each direction open at all times.

• Interstate 55/Interstate 72 over the Lost Bridge Trail bridge deck overlay and bridge joint replacement/repair are anticipated to begin in July and completed in November. Lane closures will be required, with at least one lane of traffic in each direction open at all times and the periodic closure of Lost Bridge Trail.

• Madison Street over Walnut Street bridge deck overlay, bridge joint replacement/repair and bridge painting are anticipated to begin this summer. The project is scheduled to be completed this fall. At least one lane of traffic will remain open at all times.

• 5th Street from south of Ash Street to north of Stanford Avenue patching and resurfacing as well as parking improvements begin this spring, scheduled to be completed this fall. At least one lane of traffic will be open at all times.

• Wabash Avenue from west of Robbins Road to MacArthur Boulevard and MacArthur Boulevard from Wabash Avenue to south of South Grand Avenue joint repair, resurfacing and patching were completed in May.

“These projects represent another year that IDOT will be making transformational investments in the Springfield area and all across the state,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman. “Please, pardon our dust while we Rebuild Illinois. When approaching and driving through any work zone, expect the unexpected and give workers a brake. Stay patient, put down the devices and slow down.”

Passed in 2019, Rebuild Illinois is investing a total of $33.2 billion over six years into the state’s aging transportation system, creating jobs and promoting economic growth. Rebuild Illinois is not only the largest capital program in state history, but also the first that touches all modes of transportation: roads and bridges, transit, waterways, freight and passenger rail, aviation, and bicycle and pedestrian accommodations.

Accomplishments through March include approximately $7.3 billion of improvements statewide on almost 3,800 miles of highway, more than 370 bridges and nearly 550 additional safety improvements. “Thanks to Rebuild Illinois, the Third Street to 10th Street rail conversion will stay on track for the 2025 completion date,” said Springfield Mayor Jim Langfelder. “It has also provided long overdue bridge and road repair work in and around the city.”
