City Of American Canyon Manager's Update - November 23, 2022

Hello,

City offices will be closed in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday, November 24, 2022, and Friday, November 25, 2022. Services are always available via our Virtual City Hall. We've included safety tips and important messages from our partners below related to the upcoming holiday weekend.

Thank you to our valued partners—American Canyon Troop Support (ACTS), Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1123, and the Lions Club of American Canyon—for hosting the Veterans Day Ceremony for our community to thank and honor those who serve our Nation. The Ceremony was live-streamed and is accessible here.

Veterans Day Art Contest & Special Thanks
As a part of the 2022 Veterans Day Ceremony, the American Canyon Arts Foundation, ACTS, and the Solano Napa County Professional Fire Fighters IAFF Local 1186 sponsored an Art Contest themed "Honor". The winners were recognized at the Ceremony and their art is now displayed at City Hall and included below for your enjoyment.

Congratulations Citizens Academy Graduates
This past weekend we had the privilege of welcoming the 7th class of graduates from our Citizens Academy program, who have now joined more than 100 Academy alumni. As the classes before them, these residents dedicated an evening a week for eight weeks to learn about the city's operations. They celebrated their graduation last Saturday, volunteering their time cleaning up the previous Napa Junction Elementary School site to help prepare it for public use. Thank you to the participants and the staff who contribute to our Academy's success. We plan to offer another session in 2023; stay tuned for more information.

Public Safety Tips for Thanksgiving Travel

Here are some tips from the American Canyon Police Department to remember if you are leaving home for the Thanksgiving holiday:

- Double check that all doors and windows are locked and curtains drawn before you leave.

- Set your security alarm, light timers, and check to make sure your outdoor lights work.

- If you are leaving your vehicle at home over break, make sure you remove all items of value and lock the vehicle.

- Ask a friend, trusted neighbor, or family member to keep an eye on your home while you are away.

- Store and secure any loose items that may be in the yard: bikes, scooters, ladders, etc.

- If you return home and discover forced entry into your home, go to the nearest safe place and contact police immediately.

Fats, Oils, and Greases
Don't Belong in the Drain!

The holiday season is upon us! We know you are excited to cook your special meals and have your family together again. As you do, please remember that Fats, Oils, and Greases (FOG) are things that should NOT go down the drain this holiday season.

Here are things you can do to keep FOG from plugging up the pipes in your home and keep our waterways clean!

Only Rain in the Drain!

Help us protect our stormwater systems by ensuring no leaves end up in the gutter! Raking leaves into the gutter negatively affects our local environment & wildlife and can lead to localized flooding, pollution in the Napa River, and increased mosquito presence. 

Avoid blowing, raking or piling leaves into the gutter and instead utilize your yard waste bin from Recology Vallejo-American Canyon. Need an additional waste bin? Contact Recology today!

Recology Thanksgiving Schedule
Recology does not provide collection service on Thanksgiving Day. Service for Thursday and Friday customers will be delayed by one day. Christmas and New Year's Day both fall on Sundays this year, so there will not be any service interruptions.

Board of Directors Vacancy at Napa RCD

The County Executive Officer has announced one (1) opening on the Napa County Resource Conservation District’s Board of Directors. The District’s mission is to support and empower everyone in Napa County to conserve, protect, and restore natural resources and sustainably manage working lands.

Interested applicants must be registered voters in the State of California, must reside within the District, must either own real property in the District or act as the designated agent of a resident land owner within the District, or have served for at least two years as an associate director of the District providing advisory or other assistance to the Board of Directors, must not hold an incompatible public agency position during the term of office, and must demonstrate an interest in soil and water conservation.

Anyone interested in consideration for appointment must submit a completed application form. Application forms are available at the County Executive Office (1195 Third Street, Suite 310, Napa) or online at the County of Napa's Committees & Commissions webpage. The recruitment will remain open until filled.

Sen. Bill Todd Virtual Town Hall

You're invited to join Sen. Bill Dodd for his next virtual town hall on November 29, 2022, at 6 PM with California's Controller-elect, Malia Cohen, and a panel of experts discussing midterm election outcomes at the state and federal levels.

The town hall will be streamed live over multiple channels and broadcast on KSVY Sonoma. Sen. Dodd and his guests will take questions via email and phone. For ways to stream, visit Senate District 3's site.
