Lost Towns of the Quabbin: Author Talk with Elena Palladino
Wednesday, Jul. 19, 6:00pm - 7:00pm
Join historian and author Elena Palladino as she talks about her novel Lost Towns of the Swift River Valley: Drowned by the Quabbin. In April 1938, Swift River Valley residents held a farewell ball to mark the demise of the quintessential New England towns of Enfield, Greenwich, Dana, and Prescott. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts sacrificed these three towns to build the Quabbin, a massive reservoir of drinking water for residents of Boston. Elena's research recounts the story of these communities as seen through eyes of those who lived there until the end.
Elena grew up in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, and now lives in Ware. She holds a BA in English from Simmons University, an MA in literary and cultural studies from Carnegie Mellon University, and an EdM in higher education from Harvard University. She currently works in higher education in Western Massachusetts. Registration required to attend either in the library, or online via Zoom.

Meet Your Neighbor: Learn About Wood Burning & Carving with Steve Berard
Thursday, Jul. 27, 6:00pm
For the latest installment of our Meet Your Neighbor series, Steve Berard will highlight one of his recent wood burning pieces and demonstrate a simple relief wood carving. Steve is a member of the New England Wood Carvers (NEWC), a group dedicated to keeping this artistry alive and thriving by introducing people to the craft. He recently started free wood carving and wood burning group lessons. While Steve was exposed to wood carving in high school, his interest was put on hold due to college, a career in science and the defense industry, and the demands of raising a family. He returned to his early projects later in life and had a desire to learn more. With patience and perseverance, he is self-taught through books from the library! Primarily carving in the round, Steve also does relief carving, and most recently began wood burning nature scenes. Registration required to attend. To learn more about the central mass carving lessons or meeting times and locations you can reach him by email [email protected] or check out the NEWC.org website for more information.
Boylston Library's Meet Your Neighbor series showcases local talent, skills, and knowledge while providing an opportunity to get acquainted with various community members. If you know someone local who might want to participate in this ongoing series, please email [email protected].
